The steady increase in exports achieved by the Turkish steel pipe sector has given way to a stagnant trend due to the turmoil in Iraq. The inability to calm the waters in Iraq, the largest market for the sector, is leading to a significant decrease in exports to the region. While the total exports of the Turkish steel pipe sector reached 1.259 million tons, showing an increase of 2.16% in quantity during the period of January-August 2014, there was a decrease of 3.68% in value, totaling $1.065 billion. During the same period, exports to Iraq experienced a 20.94% decrease in quantity, reaching 218,409 tons, and a 25.39% decrease in value, totaling $168.292 million.
According to the data from the Steel Pipe Manufacturers Association (ÇEBİD), the sector's exports during the period of January-August 2014 saw a 2.16% increase in quantity compared to the same period last year, reaching 1.259 million tons, while there was a 3.68% decrease in value, totaling $1.065 billion. The exports to Iraq suffered a blow due to the recent developments in the region. However, Iraq maintained its position as the leading destination for the sector's exports. During January-August 2014, Iraq, the USA, and the UK were the top three countries for exports. During this period, exports to Iraq decreased by 25.39% to $168.292 million, while exports to the USA increased by 11.9% to $155.061 million, and exports to the UK increased by 66.31% to $121.871 million. Looking at the monthly export figures of the steel pipe sector, the effects of recent developments in our neighboring regions are more apparent. In August, steel pipe exports decreased by 13.42% in quantity to 140,450 tons and by 22.94% in value to $116.032 million compared to the same month last year. Export to Iraq decreased by 54.31% in value and by 47.11% in quantity in August compared to the previous year. Commenting on the August export figures, Mehmet Zeren, the Secretary-General of the Steel Pipe Manufacturers Association, said, "The economic dimensions of the events in Iraq are as distressing as their humanitarian aspects. Although Iraq remains the country to which we export the most, the uncertainty in the country is having a negative impact on our sector. Despite all these adverse developments, our exports to European Union countries continue to increase. We remain confident in our production capacity and product quality, and we believe that our sector will maintain its position in the global market."
